1. How does a refrigerated container work?

A refrigerated container — also known as a reefer in maritime jargon — is not simply a container with ice in it. It's a complete, autonomous refrigeration system integrated directly into the container's structure.

In practice, here's how it works:

The refrigeration unit is attached to one end of the container. It draws in warm internal air, cools it using a refrigerant gas circuit, and then redistributes it evenly inside. The walls are covered with high-density polyurethane panels that maintain a stable temperature by limiting heat exchange with the outside.

To operate, the refrigerated container requires an external power supply. It plugs into a standard or industrial outlet depending on the power required. This is the only technical prerequisite to consider before installation.

2. What temperature range?

This is often the first question we are asked. A standard refrigerated container maintains a temperature between -25°C and +25°C. This is an extremely wide range that covers almost all professional needs in Europe.

Here are some concrete examples of temperatures used in different sectors:

Sector Recommended temperature
Fresh fruits and vegetables +2°C to +8°C
Dairy products 0°C to +4°C
Meats and fish -2°C to +2°C
Frozen products -18°C to -22°C
Medicines and vaccines +2°C to +8°C
Cut flowers +4°C to +8°C
Wines and spirits +12°C to +16°C

The temperature is precisely adjusted via an integrated thermostat. Once set, the system automatically maintains the target temperature regardless of the external temperature.

3. Available dimensions at Eurocontex

As with our other containers, the refrigerated container is available in three sizes. Be aware — the interior dimensions are slightly reduced compared to standard containers, as the insulation takes up space on the walls.
